Is yellow fever required to inter Tanzania?
Tanzania Yellow Fever Requirements
Tanzania’s yellow fever requirements can sometimes be confusing, but Prime Kilimanjaro is here to make them easy to understand. Tanzania is a yellow fever-free country, which means it is safe to visit without worrying about this virus. Below, we explain what yellow fever is and whether you need the vaccine before travelling.
Do You Need a Yellow Fever Vaccine for Tanzania?
For most travellers, a yellow fever vaccination is not needed when entering Tanzania. The World Health Organization classifies the country as low risk, so if you are travelling from a place where yellow fever does not exist, such as Europe or the United States, you will not be required to show proof of vaccination.
What is Yellow Fever?
Yellow fever is a serious viral disease spread by mosquitoes. Symptoms usually appear three to six days after infection and can include fever, chills, headaches, and muscle pain. In some cases, the illness can become severe, but it is important to remember that Tanzania itself is safe and free from this disease.
When is Proof of Vaccination Required?
You will only need to show proof of yellow fever vaccination when arriving in Tanzania if you are travelling from a country where the virus is still present. This rule also applies if you have spent more than twelve hours in transit through one of these high-risk countries. In such cases, it is best to check with your doctor before travelling and make sure your vaccinations are up to date.
Receiving the Yellow Fever Vaccine
The yellow fever vaccine is given as a single dose at least 10 days before travel to a high-risk country. One dose provides lifelong protection, and you’ll receive an official certificate of vaccination, which you may be asked to show upon arrival in Tanzania.
If your doctor advises against the vaccine due to medical reasons, you can still travel with an official exemption letter. Presenting this to the immigration officer will waive the vaccination requirement, allowing your trip to continue as planned.
